The Alchemist

About The Alchemist

The Alchemist was opened by John and Jen Kimmich in 2003 as a 60-seat brewpub in Waterbury, Vermont. Two months after opening, John brewed the first batch of Heady Topper, an unfiltered double IPA that would become one of the most sought-after beers in America and pioneer the hazy New England IPA style. When Tropical Storm Irene devastated their Waterbury pub in 2011, the Kimmichs pivoted to focus on their production brewery, turning adversity into opportunity. In 2016, they opened their larger brewery and visitor center in Stowe, where they continue to craft fresh, unfiltered IPAs with an obsessive focus on quality over expansion. Today, The Alchemist is a $26 million-a-year operation, privately owned and run by the Kimmichs, who intentionally limit production to ensure the consistency and freshness that made Heady Topper legendary.
